Strategic acquisition pushes Walmart further into healthcare

Walmart has acquired the technology platform, patents and key intellectual property of CareZone, a health-tech startup which helps individuals manage their medications.

Improving access to healthcare services

CareZone was developed to help users organise their health information and access health services. Through a mobile app, users can scan their insurance cards and product labels to better understand what is covered by their plans and organise home deliveries. CareZone Pharmacy will remain a separate company, unrelated to Walmart.

Advancing digital healthcare solutions

The technology and team members joining the retailer will enhance Walmart’s current health and wellness capabilities and advance its digital health care solutions. Healthcare is a growing area of focus for the retailer. This is an area where it believes it can make a significant impact through layering in its value and access credentials

Testing different models and services

A survey by its consumer insights team, revealed that cost is the main barrier for 43% of Walmart US shoppers, followed by convenience (27%) and access (22%). Recently it launched its third Walmart Health centre, offering key healthcare services at affordable prices, as part of its plan to test different models and services. Healthcare is becoming an integral part of Walmart's ecosystem as broadens its approach beyond omnichannel retailing.
