It has been announced that Darren Goldney is to step down as Managing Director of Unitas, the UK’s largest wholesale buying group.  He will leave the group in April, when John Kinney, currently Sales & Marketing Director will take over the role.

Goldney a principal architect in the formation of Unitas

Having joined the Today’s buying group as Managing Director in 2017, Darren Goldney was a key figure in bringing it together with the Landmark group to create Unitas, the biggest trading group in the UK wholesaling sector, representing wholesalers with a combined turnover of £8bn. On the completion of the merger Darren then took on the role of Unitas’ first managing director. Formed in 2018 Unitas was created at a time when wholesaling was faced with the increased involvement of major national retailers in the sector, and especially Tesco, through its acquisition of Booker. In enabling local and regional wholesalers to maintain national activity in an increasingly competitive business landscape, Unitas has had a critical role in maintaining the dynamism of independent wholesalers throughout the UK.

His successor also has long senior tenure with group

John Kinney, who will succeed Darren Goldney in April, has also been with Unitas since the group was created in 2018, first as Retail Director then latterly as Sales & Marketing Director. His experience in the wholesale buying group sector goes back to 2011, when he joined the Today’s Group as Retail Director responsible for the development of its symbol group package and other engagement initiatives for independent retailers. Like Darren Goldney John Kinney was closed involved in bringing the Today’s and Landmark groups together to create Unitas.

Commenting on his appointment new Managing Director John Kinney said:

‘I am extremely pleased to be given the opportunity by the Unitas board to lead the organisation forward. This is a great business with a fantastic opportunity to grow and improve further. While there are challenges for our members servicing the out of home sector due to the impact of Covid, I am confident in the future for the group and I am looking forward to working with all our members and suppliers to maximise the opportunities for all.’
