Loblaw has launched a new discount store concept in Canada, ‘Box by No Frills’. Based on its successful ‘No Frills’ soft-discount store format, this smaller-format store aims to offer a quick and convenient shopping experience in a no-frills environment. Offering an edited range of products, a strong private label offer and operating with an EDLP model, this concept offers something new and unique for the Canadian market.

Building on the success of its flagship store at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Loblaw has developed a number of smaller format stores in its image.  These include the Loblaws banner store at Queen and Portland  in the city, and its new Le Provigo Marche concept which has been developed for stores in Quebec.  The most recent evolution is its new CityMarket concept in Vancouver.  We took a visit to this store to understand what elements and learnings have been taken from the flagship store in Toronto, and how Loblaw’s food-focused formats could develop in the future.
