Earlier this year, Sobeys launched its FreshCo discount format in western Canada as part of its plan to improve its competitiveness in the region. Recently, we visited its South-Asian inspired concept, Chalo! FreshCo, which also forms part of this initiative.

A first look at the rapidly growing Danish variety discounter’s first store in France. Normal focuses on health and beauty products with a strategy of everyday low prices and no promotional offers. The range includes mainly branded products sold at prices up to 50% cheaper than the market.

We visited Wilko’s newly opened store in Acton, North West London. At 10,500 sq ft it is smaller than the retailers standard store. Expansion in London is a priority for the retailer and adapting the core proposition to fit into smaller sites is key to that expansion.

Aldi launched its first trial Local store in March 2019 in Balham, South London. Aldi has emphasised this is not a move to expand into convenience. Instead, it is a response to the challenges of operating in London, with a lack of the larger sites with car parks. In this store visit report we look at the format in more detail and identify how it differs from standard Aldi stores.

We recently visited a Bargain Buys in North London to understand more about the Poundstretcher owned banner. The store is on the high street in a highly competitive area with an Aldi Local close by. It has a reduced offering from its larger branches, focusing more on a range that is easier to shop without a car. The variety discounter typically stocks around 5,000 SKUs of mainly branded products across food, health & beauty, garden and homeware.

The X5 lab store is located just inside Moscow’s second ring. It shares the space with a Pyaterochka store where retail solutions are tested and their impact on shoppers’ experience is assessed. The concept store tests innovative retail solutions to assess their impact on sales and costs. These are conducted before deciding on whether to roll them out to the wider X5 network. We visited the store to observe the solutions being tested.
